London : Thomas Edgerton, Whitehall, 1813The first edition of Pride and Prejudice was published anonymously, like all her novels, in 1813, attributed only to "the Author of Sense and Sensibility," which was advertised on the titlepage as having been written "By a Lady." Austen originally began the novel as a series of letters between the characters--an epistolary novel--under the title "First Impressions." This digital edition uses the Project Gutenberg etext. Title page is sourced from the the Lilly Library, Indiana University, via Wikimedia Commons. Volume and page breaks duplicate those in the first edition. To learn more about the epistolary context of the novel, see this article from The Smithsonian Magazine, discussing a new edition of the 19 letters that appear in the novel.
